Kinja'd!!!

Was a birthday gift from an in-law who is into the craft beers and such. I don’t dabble too much, but enough to know the difference. I normally don’t enjoy stouts, but I do like high alcohol beer, and I like bourbon.

I was told this improves over time up to 5 years. The bottle I received was a 2016, so...3 years isn’ t too bad. I have a second that I might save for later. Internet said to serve it at “cellar temp”, which is about 55-60F. So I threw it in the fridge for about an hour before serving.

Woo that kick really gets ya. You can taste all 13.8% of the alcohol in here. It was delicious. Not too bitter for my pallet, not too sweet to gut you either. But you can definitely taste the caramel and vanilla.

That sounds really good! I’m always iffy about barrel aged beers - I love beer, and love bourbon, so it always sounds like a great idea, but I find most of them to be way to sweet. That sounds like it’s hitting the right combination of flavors though!

Also, if you want a strong beer look for Flying Fish Exit 3.  It’s a 15% Braggot (basically a beer-meade hybrid).

I haven’t yet had a chance to try any Bourbon Country, but I have heard it is one of the best.

It amazes me how people are able to hang onto beer for so long. I buy what I intend to drink lol! I currently have a bottle in my basement that my local brewery aged in a Pappy Van Winkle barrel . I’ve had it for about a month, which is by far a personal best.

Oooh I love a good mead. I used to live down the road from the Dragonmead Microbrewery. I was spoiled with the amount of mead I drank weekly. I’ll look that up.

I don’t see myself holding on to this other bottle much longer. I too am impatient with the drinks. I most likely won’t notice a difference either.

I just like strong beers. This one is good because, while sweet, its not overly so. And its also not particularly fruity, the blueberry flavor is just a hint.

I love barrel aged beers as well as stouts - I’ll have to keep my eye open for stuff like that.

Barrel aging needs to be done more often - Innis & Gunn is the original for me and I fucking love it.

My problem with crafts is that there are so many smaller breweries that have come up which all do some variation of, “Look, we can add hops to beer, too!” and wind up with some IPA stuff that’s really not interesting to me anymore. It was really cool to taste something different at first, but now that everyone’s doing it (and many aren’t doing it very well) I just drink regular beer now.

Speaking of blueberry, I’ve been drinking this Bumble Berry ale from Fat Head’s. Not too sweet, and just heavy enough to be able to drink a few of them.

I don’t like beers that are too hoppy, or anything overly complicated (peanut butter stout? no thanks). Lately, at microbreweries I’ve gone to, I only find maybe one or two beers appealing out of 18-20 options. I stick to my cheap beer most of the time. The worst are the micro’s that give you a hard time for ordering a domestic.
